Fukushima Polishing was established in 1986 as a polishing processing business. It now handles everything from polishing to welding, sheet metal work, and can manufacturing, primarily producing baking oven components and replacement parts for food factories. Its ability to handle one-off items and small-lot production, coupled with its commitment to meeting detailed requirements, has earned recognition and fostered strong customer relationships. Recently, the company has gained attention for developing upcycled products utilising manufacturing offcuts and for fostering a workplace where female craftsmen thrive.
Fukushima Polishing excels in its responsiveness through integrated production and its beautiful finish achieved by combining welding and polishing process.
We complete all processes in-house, from sheet metal fabrication involving drafting to cutting, bending, welding, and final polishing. This eliminates subcontracting between stages and the associated movement of workpieces, enabling short lead times and cost reduction. Simultaneously, it allows flexible responses such as production without drawings, one-off processing, and small-lot production.
Regarding welding technology, we specialise in welding thin sheets around 1mm thick. While heat distortion and porosity are common issues in thin-sheet welding, we overcome these challenges through proprietary techniques such as rapid cooling and jig-based fixation. Yukie Sugiyama, CEO holds the Aluminium Welding Qualification Certificate, a certification held by few practitioners, demonstrating her expertise in the highly challenging field of thin-sheet aluminium welding. Regarding polishing process, the presence of veteran technicians with over 50 years' experience provides the foundation. They meticulously remove weld beads, achieving a finish free of steps or cracks.
Thus, the advanced integration of welding and polishing process enables the company to achieve highly regarded finishes: the aesthetically and functionally demanding 400-grit mirror finish and the refined hairline finish.
Fukushima Polishing operates under the motto of being a ‘town workshop that never turns down a job’, offering flexible solutions while closely addressing customer challenges. Furthermore, Sugiyama, CEO personally works on the shop floor, practising manufacturing that leverages both technical skill and sensitivity. By actively sharing this approach, she aims to become a role model for ‘manufacturing that women can do too’. With reliable technical capabilities and a warm, feminine sensibility, the company strives daily in its MONOZUKURI.
Fukushima Polishing is participating in the “SHINKEN-ZEMI(Serious Seminar)”, a collaborative product development initiative between Kindai University and Cement Produce Design, working with students to develop upcycled products. This initiative utilises offcuts generated during manufacturing, aiming to create new markets through product planning that combines the students' fresh perspectives with the company's technical expertise. Concurrently, it provides opportunities for students to experience the reality of MONOZUKURI through factory tours and prototyping. This industry-academia collaboration, which involves passing on technical skills to the next generation, is attracting significant attention.
