Kimura Bedding Store has been manufacturing and selling cotton-filled futons for over 100 years since its founding by my grandfather. In 2006, following shop renovations, we established our workshop on the second floor and have since been affectionately known as the local bedding specialist.
At Kimura Bedding Store, 1st grade Certified Skilled Worker of Bedding Manufacturer qualification undertake the tailoring and re-stuffing of cotton futons and zabuton cushions, as well as providing consultation for the refurbishment of down duvets. The shop stocks a wide range of products, including cotton, down, and wool futons, washable futons, and zabuton cushions.
At Kimura Bedding Store, the Kimura couple manage all aspects of the business. The Kimuras possess solid technical skills, underpinned by the knowledge and experience gained at the Tokyo Futon Technical Institute (now closed). Furthermore, both husband and wife hold 1st grade Certified Skilled Worker of Bedding Manufacturer. This national qualification certifies proficiency in all processes essential to bedding production, including fabric inspection, measuring, cutting, sewing, stuffing, and finishing. It is notable that two qualified individuals are employed at this independent shop.
In recent years, growing health consciousness has heightened interest in sleep, leading to an expanding market for household bedding. Attention is increasingly focused on personalisable bedding tailored to individual sleep styles, aiming to improve quality of life through enhanced sleep quality. Against this backdrop, requests to Kimura Bedding Store – which crafts bespoke futons, each piece unique – remain constant. Users consult directly with the artisans to create a one-of-a-kind sleeping experience, tailored to their preferences regarding body shape, size, weight, and more. As the neighbourhood sleep concierge, the craft continues to support the slumber of modern individuals.
Even with identical materials, fabrics, and stitching, individuals perceive the feel and weight of a futon differently. At Kimura Bedding Store, we meticulously advise on factors such as futon length and filling quantity to provide each customer with a satisfying product. To achieve this, continuous updating of skills and knowledge is essential. We participate in the Skills Grand Prix, open only to 1st grade Certified Skilled Worker, and attend training sessions organised by the Osaka Prefecture Bedding Technicians Association. This serves as a forum for craftsmen to mutually enhance their skills, demonstrating their dedication and passion as makers.
Kimura Bedding Store ran a “Futon Making Workshop”, featuring demonstrations of making duvets, futons, and zabuton cushions alongside hands-on zabuton-making sessions at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Over the two-day event, approximately 400 people observed the demonstrations, while around 70 participated in the zabuton-making experience, making it a resounding success. This proved an excellent opportunity to showcase the appeal of Japanese bedding not only to overseas visitors, for whom futon and zabuton culture is unfamiliar, but also to younger generations.
